DUNES 2005-present (ongoing)
This black and white series was photographed entirely at Oceano Dunes Nature Preserve near Pismo Beach, California (San Luis Obispo county). It’s a strictly formalist exploration of light, line, and texture, mimicking the look of infrared black and white film, though shot entirely on digital. Hat tip to some of my early Zone System heroes (Ansel Adams, Minor White, and Edward Weston).
Late afternoon sunlight is the best for shadows near the Pacific.
Backlighting is great for silhouettes--and flare.
